Members' Exhibition at the Quinlan

Last Thursday evening Charles and I took some time off to attend the opening reception for the Quinlan Visual Arts Center's 62nd Annual Members' Exhibition. It was another packed house! (I had to wait quite a while before I could take any pictures, or you wouldn't have been able to see anything through the crowd.)

The quality of the art this year was superb. It speaks wonders for the organization when so many accomplished artists are on the member rolls.

Two of Charles' paintings, An Epic in Three Acts and Persimmon and Bronze, are included in the exhibition. It will remain hanging until December 5.

"Takin' it Easy" Travels to Denver for AIS Exhibition

"Takin' it Easy - a Study" has been accepted into the 10th Annual National Juried Exhibition of the American Impressionist Society.

We are so thrilled to be included in this prestigious and extremely high quality show. Only 189 pieces were accepted out of almost 650 entries. The judge for this year's exhibition is AIS Master Artist Quang Ho.

If you're interested in seeing some really wonderful paintings, the entire exhibit is currently on-line and can be viewed through the AIS website.

"Takin' it Easy" ships out next week for Denver and her Rocky Mountain adventures. Oh, how I wish we were going with her!

Panda Paint-Out at Zoo Atlanta

On Saturday, September 12, we got to spend the day at the zoo! The Marietta / Cobb Museum of Art organized a paint-out to benefit the giant panda program's "Give So They Stay" campaign. A crowd of 25 artists showed up for the event, including a group of art students from a local high school. We raised over $500 on Saturday, and the works created will go on auction in October and hopefully bring in quite a bit more.

Zoo Atlanta leases their giant pandas from China, and has been relying on their corporate sponsors for the payments every year. But not this year! Corporations are feeling the pinch too and the zoo is now having to call on private donations for the panda program. China has agreed to accept a half-payment this year, so Zoo Atlanta only has to come up with $500,000 by the end of December. If not, all four pandas will have to go back. Zoo Atlanta is one of only four zoos in the country with giant pandas, and until last month, the only zoo currently with a baby panda.

We had a great time at the paint-out. Charles braved the crowds inside the panda house for an up-close look and got 2 very nice paintings done in there, with a third done outside later in the day. (That baby panda, Xi Lan, sure is a cute little bugger.) The results from the day will be included in an online auction opening in October. I'll be sure to post a link when it's available.

Audubon Artists 67th Annual Exhibition

"Natasha", Charles' beautifully enigmatic oil portrait, is currently spending some time in New York City. She was accepted into Audubon Artists Inc's 67th Annual Exhibition, which opens next week in the Salmagundi Club's historic galleries.

Imagine what she'll see there on Fifth Avenue! I hope she remembers to send a postcard...

"Gold Elephant" Receives Award in Atlanta

Two weeks ago at the opening reception of the Atlanta Fine Arts League's 3rd Annual National Exhibition, Charles' still life painting "Gold Elephant" was honored with an Exceptional Merit Award.

The juror for the exhibition was Ed Horlbeck, a retired commercial artist originally from Pittsburg PA and a member of the Society of Illustrators in New York City. We were very excited to meet and chat with him and the many other visiting artists at the reception.

The show will remain at the Roswell Visual Arts Center Gallery until October 2. It's a wonderfully varied exhibition with works by artists from all over the country. Make a point to drop by if you're in the Roswell area. Gallery and contact info can be found in our previous post.

Archive of Newsletter Past Issues

For a little over a year now I've been writing and sending out a quarterly newsletter to everyone on Charles' email list. They have been very well-received and I've gotten a lot of great comments about them. I'd recently arranged for them to be converted to linkable webpages, but now I've gone one better...

All of the past issues are now available in our new newsletter archive.

I've added a link over in the left margin just under the newsletter sign-up button. A link will also go up on the main webpage after I have put together the next update.

Two Paintings Accepted into Art Kudos 2009

"Lavender Lace" and "Of Wood and Roses" have both been accepted into the Art Kudos 2009 International Juried Art Exhibition.

This is the 5th year for this diverse online exhibition. Charles was also named a finalist in 2007 and 2008. (Those shows are still online in the archives section of their webpage.)

The group of artworks this year consists of 140 pieces by 132 artists from 15 countries. We are very honored to be a part of it.

Paint-Out at Zoo Atlanta, September 12th

Attention plein-air artists and panda lovers! We're passing along information about a great paint-out coming up to benefit the giant pandas at Zoo Atlanta. Please pass this information along to anyone else who might be interested. The image links to the accompanying PDF flyer.

The Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art and Zoo Atlanta have teamed up to provide area artists with a unique plein-air painting and drawing opportunity.

In order to benefit Zoo Atlanta's giant pandas and the "Give So They Stay" campaign, the zoo has invited us to spend a Saturday afternoon creating art of these beloved animals. With a $20 donation to the panda program, all participants will receive free admission for themselves and all their painting and drawing gear to Zoo Atlanta! This is a unique opportunity to work from life and benefit in-need animals.

Saturday, September 12, 2009, 1:00-6:00 pm.

All participants must prepay by Wednesday, September 9, 2009. Checks and cash only; checks made payable to "Zoo Atlanta" with "Give So They Stay" in the notes section. Mail payment to the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art, 30 Atlanta Street, Marietta GA 30060 or bring it by in person.

Governor's Office Welcomes Paintings by Past Students

For the past several years, the Georgia Governor's Office has played host to artworks by a variety of Georgia artists. This year among the chosen few are two of Charles' past students (and long-time friends), Keith Barnett and Denis Byrd!

Denis' plein air oil painting "High Falls in Autumn" joins three of Keith's landscapes: "Tree Line at Cloudland Canyon," "Creek at High Falls," and "Light through the Leaves."

These paintings were submitted to the Governor's Office exhibition by one of our local arts organizations, Arts Clayton. They will hang throughout the Governor's suite at the capital for a year, until the summer of 2010.

Our hearty congratulations go out to both Denis and Keith for their beautiful paintings and this great honor shown to them. Huzzahh!
