Five Day Workshop a Great Success

During the last week of March, Charles was in Blairsville, Georgia conducting a 5 day long oil painting workshop at the Carriage House Art Center.

Focusing on painting the still-life, the week included two demonstrations which illustrated two separate approaches and plenty of painting time for the students to work on each idea. The importance of composition in the still-life was stressed, especially as it related to the perception of depth and movement within the painting.

By all accounts, the week was a tremendous success. Several of Charles' still-life paintings are currently on display and available for sale at the Carriage House Gallery. Please contact them for more info.

New Works: "A Belle Meade Morning"

This is one of the paintings Charles did when we were in Nashville this past October for the opening reception of the Oil Painters of America's Eastern Regional Exhibition. The day after the reception many of the attending artists met at Belle Meade Plantation for an OPA sponsored paint-out. (Read our earlier post about the weekend here.)

This was Charles' first painting that day, with the morning sun coming up behind the main house and lighting up the season's first bright spots of fall foliage. (12 x 16, oil on panel, 2008)

In the Binders Spotlight

Binders Art Supply in Atlanta just recently started their own blog in order to supplement their already chock-full website with fun, interesting and valuable information about their products, people and services.

Today's post puts Charles in the limelight!

The Binders staff asked him to write up a statement about his classes and his teaching style. Click over to their blog to read it and let us know what you think.

Charles has held his painting classes at Binders for almost two years now. You'll find him there just about every Tuesday.

New Works: "Persimmon and Bronze"

The vast majority of this beautiful little painting was created in just a few hours one evening when Charles and I were skipping out on a local art shindig we had originally planned on attending. He called me early that afternoon: "You know, I really don't want to go tonight. I want to PAINT!" So that's what he did - and this piece was sitting on the easel when I got home from work a few hours later. (12 x 16, oil on mounted canvas, 2008)

"Sarah Danielle" Included in Video Tour

The Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art in Marietta, Georgia has recently launched a beautiful new website just a few months after completing extensive renovations on the interior of their historic building. As part of their re-introduction to the public they created a short video tour of their organization and services, their building and their history.

It was a very pleasant surprise to see "Sarah Danielle" featured during the voice-over elaborating on the collection and the "important regional and Georgia Artists" whose works one may see on any given visit.

"Sarah Danielle" hung at the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art last summer as part of Metro Montage VIII. A link to the video is available here.

New Works: "Still Life with Two Bells"

I just love this new painting. From the first day Charles had it up on the easel it just struck us as something special. With some pieces you seem to know early on that they will work out well. I especially like how both the composition and the shape of the canvas carry you through the image from the dark into the light. (14 x 24, oil on linen, 2008)

The statuette in the painting is a figurine of the Buddhist goddess Tara who, in that religion, represents virtuous and enlightened action and universal compassion. She is believed to help her followers overcome dangers, fears and anxieties and to guard them on their spiritual journey to enlightenment. Here she sits serenely in the light, surrounded by lush fruits and flowers.

I've also included a detail so you can really appreciate the brushwork on this. Amazing!
